2.1. Infrared with a Handspring Visor

If you have a Handspring Visor handheld, depending on the model, you may have to add some software to your Visor to support Infrared HotSync capability. Palm did not add the ability to HotSync natively through the HotSync applet until PalmOS version 3.3.

Handspring Visors (except the Prism color Visor) ship with OS 3.1H of the PalmOS. The Prism is the only model which ships with OS3.5 onboard (to support color), and it will support IR HotSync natively. For those with a model other than the Prism, three options are available at this time to handle Infrared HotSync. To add the capability to sync over IR with your Handspring Visor, you can download one of the following programs to help you:

There's also a thread on IR Hotsync with the Visor at Visor Central . You can find that discussion here .

2.1.1. BeamSync

BeamSync for PalmOS

With this software your Handspring Visor handheld can HotSync via Infrared. Visor Platinum and Visor Prism can HotSync via IrDA without any additional software.

Before installing BeamSync, you'll also need to download the Palm Enhanced Infrared Update .

  1. Extract the Enhanced Infrared Update after downloading from the link above. You'll get following files:

    SerIrCommLib.prc
    SerialPanel.prc
    AMX.prc
    IrLib.prc
  2. CAUTION: After extraction, delete the following two files from the extraction directory:

    AMX.prc
    IrLib.prc

If you install these two files to your Visor, You will need to HARD RESET your Visor to recover and you WILL LOSE ALL DATA.

  3. Install following 3 files:
    bsync-e.prc (English version)
    bsync-j.prc (Japanese version)
    SerIrCommLib.prc
    SerialPanel.prc

  4. After you install these files, you will be asked to reset the Visor. Follow the instructions and reset the Visor here as prompted.

  5. When the Visor is done resetting, tap on the Home button and launch the Prefs applet

  6. Choose "BeamSync" from the upper right corner menu and you'll see an OFF/ON button. When you push ON button, BeamSync is activated

Figure 2-2. Enabling BeamSync on the Palm

If you can't see "ON" button, check the following:

    1. SerIrCommLib.prc is not installed. -> Install it

    2. You didn't reset Visor after installation -> Reset it

  7. Push the "ON" button to activate BeamSync. Go to the HotSync screen and push Local Sync to start HotSync via infrared. When HotSync via beam starts, a message "BeamSync:Beam" will appear on the upper right corner. Please check it to make sure it ran successfully.

If you want to Hotsync via the Visor cradle, Method differs according to your cradle.

  1. When using Serial Cradle: Put the visor on Cradle and start Hotsync, it'll use serial port automatically.

  2. When using a USB Cradle. Put the Visor in the cradle and start HotSync by pushing the Up or Down rocker. When HotSync has started, you can release the button. If you use the cradle more often than Infrared, you should set BeamSync to OFF and set it ON before HotSync via the BeamSync panel.

2.1.2. IrLink from IsComplete

IrLink

Note: This version of IrLink does NOT support PalmOS versions 3.3 and 3.5. Version 1.6 (in private beta testing) is going to support those versions of the OS.
